Dental Jewelry Safety Checklist Before Application

Purpose of this page: to check that the essential conditions have been considered before tooth gem application. This checklist does not claim to make the practice risk-free. For possible complications and medical sources, read tooth gem risks.

1. Red light: postpone and seek advice

Do not continue as though nothing is wrong if any of these signs are present:

• pain, unexplained sensitivity or persistent discomfort;
• suspected decay, a cracked tooth, damaged enamel or a fragile restoration;
• red, swollen, painful or bleeding gums;
• an appliance or dental treatment that may interfere with the gem;
• uncertainty about the tooth or the ability to clean the area properly.

In these situations, application should be postponed until a dentist has advised.

2. Check the gem and placement

• The gem’s composition is known and traceable.
• Its size and profile are proportionate to the tooth.
• Placement is neither too close to the gum nor on the edge of the tooth.
• The gem does not interfere with closing the mouth or rub unusually against the lip.
• The design still allows the entire surrounding tooth surface to be cleaned.

3. Check products and equipment

• Every product is identified, within its usable period and stored according to its instructions.
• The application order and timing are understood before starting.
• The curing light is compatible with the light-curing products being used.
• No nail glue, super glue or household glue appears in the protocol.
• Required instruments and consumables are ready, reducing unnecessary handling.

4. Check hygiene and organization

• The workstation is clean, clear and organized.
• Hands, instruments and consumables are managed under the applicable hygiene protocol.
• The gem will be handled as little as possible.
• Moisture control has been anticipated.
• Application can be stopped if suitable conditions are lost.

5. Inform before obtaining agreement

• The person understands that the gem is cosmetic and carries risks.
• They know the aftercare steps and habits to avoid.
• They know which signs warrant dental advice.
• They know not to scrape or pull the gem off.
• A removal option has been considered before application.

Agreement should be based on understandable information, not only on the expected appearance.

Final checklist

• ☐ No oral-health warning sign has been ignored.
• ☐ The gem and position are suitable.
• ☐ Composition and traceability are known.
• ☐ The products are identified and their instructions have been read.
• ☐ Curing light and system compatibility has been checked.
• ☐ The workstation and consumables are ready.
• ☐ Aftercare instructions have been explained.
• ☐ Warning signs and removal have been discussed.

If an important box cannot be checked, postponing is better than improvising a substitute.
